Fortunately for kids, times have changed.
In my generation we were lucky if our parents would let us have a film that cost money to purchase and then pay for the cost of the developing. There wasn’t much room for random experimental images just for the fun of it. These days with digital photography being so popular and getting instant results, many children now love photography, and that includes our 3 children.
Our youngest when she was 8, entered the Redlands 2006 Photographic Exhibition with two prints and gained first and second placing's. There were many great shots for the judges to choose from. The image that got first place is the roller coaster action shot which can be seen in the slide show here.
In her second year she gained one acceptance and 3 Highly Commended awards.
In 2007 she was nominated as a finalist in the Hunter Valley Flower Photo Competition judged by Ken Duncan.
Our middle child beat his little sister in the 2007 Redlands Exhibition taking out First and Second place with his two entered images.

Our eldest, when he was 12, entered the digital section of the Toowoomba Show in 2007 and won first place and a Highly Commended award for another image. He also got an acceptance, a merit award, second and first place in the Junior Digital section of the Peninsula Camera Club competition in May 2007.
In the 2007 Redlands Exhibition he got 3 Highly Commended awards with the 2008 exhibition seeing him win first place with another two acceptances.
In 2009 & 2010 he won first place, with some other awards for his efforts.
In the 2009 First Redlands Schools Photographic Competition he gained Second in Nature, First and Second in Open and Champion overall print.
In 2010 he again took out Champion Print in the Junior section, and other awards with his 4 prints.
In the 2010 Redlands Schools Competition, our youngest got First in Open, First in People and Champion Print.
